Shoulder impingement is defined as an irritation of the structures underneath the acromion process, resulting in pain with things like reaching overhead.
In other words, because the upper back isn’textending or the shoulder blade isn’t tilting enough, we end up with a bone that smashes the soft tissue structures underneath it as the arm is moved.
The symptoms of pain are aggravated by overhead movements or any shoulder movement that compresses those structures.
Most people feel a sudden onset of pain and end up complaining of weakness in the shoulder.
What makes this worse is if we don’t do anything about it. Not addressing this correctly, can easily leave an athlete with a tear in the rotator cuff muscles or a rupture in the bicep.
